Chinese calligraphy is one of the four basic skills and disciplines (琴棋書畫)of the Chinese literati.  It is regarded as the most abstract and sublime form of art in the Chinese culture.  Unlike other visual arts, all calligraphy strokes become final on contact with the paper, demanding careful planning and confident execution.  While there are defined word strokes and structures to follow, the expression can be very creative and full of imagination.

By controlling the concentration of ink, the thickness and adsorbability of the paper, and the flexibility of the brush, the calligrapher is free to produce an infinite variety of styles and forms.  Calligraphy is a mental exercise that requires engaging mind and body coordination.  It is a most relaxing yet highly disciplined exercise for the body as well as the mind.

The club holds calligraphy study class once a week for the seniors who are interested in this art.  Our members gather together to practice, learn and share their appreciation of this amazing art.
